Experience 3
Personal experience with five-year old students:
A
five-year old girl, who attends a kindergarten, was selected to introduce to
her the theme “basic needs”.
First,
she listened to the story about the basic needs of a Koala. The introduction to
it was in Spanish because she doesn’t speak English.
During
the story-telling the student listen that Katy’s mother was mentioned but the
images doesn’t show her. She asks constantly where does the mother koala was
and why she couldn’t see her. This caused some uncertainty in the teacher because
she couldn’t specifically tell the child why the koala mother wasn’t there.
The next activity was the one in which the
student pretend to be a buffalo. The supermarket scene was prepared with the
implements and materials. The student select what a buffalo need to live,
clarifying that buffalos don’t go to the supermarket.
Related to the cognitive
domain, the teacher was able to detect that the student manage to identify,
describe, explain, and establish the similarities and differences in the basic
needs of living things.
The assessment rubric
wasn’t apply because the teacher only speaks Spanish, but it is consider as an
excellent tool.
